Etymology: By Schmidt ad loc. connected with Lat. (Iber.) bal(l)ūca `gold-sand, grain of gold'; s. s. v. balūx and Belardi Doxa 3, 198. Improbable, as there is no hint for gold. The only other word with -εκ- I know is ἀλώπηξ. Most prob. Pre-Greek.
